WD06 Ramblings Day 4 and Wrap Up
Wednesday, October 4, 2006Molly talked about professionalism over breakfast - it's an interesting topic and one deserving a lot more attention. There needs to be a clear indication of what a web professional is and Molly challenged us to think of ways each of us can do it in our own lives. She also encouraged us to think about our personal mantras. I think mine would be 'care about the things no one sees'. These are the things that are often invisible but add up to create a positive web experience.
Andy Clarke gave an excellent presentation about inspired design. I think this was a clear highlight of the 2 days. Finally I realised I'm not the only weird one. I too find myself looking at every day things and wondering how they would work as a web page element. He declared that the web, as a platform, has won and that now it's time to really go for it and explore new ways to evoke emotion and build things people will love to use.
Thomas Vander Wal gave an excellent exploration of a concept he has coined ' the come to me web'. The main design focus is information attraction and the way people create their own personal 'info-clouds'. People need relevant informaiton to find it's own way to them rather than having to go look for it all the time.
The closing keynote was called "You-Biquity" by Mark Pesce, an optimistic glimpse into the future of connectedness. One where our devices actually do useful things instead of sitting around dumb, waiting for messages. One where we can actually get to use all the data we create by simply going about our daily lives. Adrian has mused about similar things .
From there I had to leave straight away (and miss the free booze from Sitepoint , damn) and catch a plane. My head has been spinning ever since, trying to absorb all the stuff I saw. I guess if you were to sum it up it might go like this: "people, people, people, people, people, people, people, people, people, people, people, people, people..." (but replace dancing, sweaty, overweight executive with switched on web guru).
