W3C Outline Generator

Wednesday, December 14, 2005

Oh no he's at it again! Yes, I keep harping on about bloody heading tags but I think the importance of correct semantic markup is way too often underestimated, misunderstood or overlooked. I've said as much in the two previous entries I've written, Correct use of headings and More on the correct use of headings.

I'm harping on again because I've discovered that the W3C HTML validator has an outline generator. To use it you go to the detailed validator form and make sure you have the 'Show Outline' option box ticked. It will generate a page outline based upon all the heading tags it finds in your source code. If you have used heading tags correctly you should see a concise and accurate outline of your web page. It will also attempt to show mistakes like missing heading levels.
