Trying to explain what having ADD is like

Thursday, December 8, 2005

I've been attempting to write my first article about having ADD. When trying to explain what having ADD is like I often wonder is anyone even interested? I mean you don't hear many questions along the lines of  "What is it like to have depression?" No one seems to be interested in afflictions of the mind. In fact I'd go as far as saying they make people genuinely uncomfortable.

But I'm slowly coming to respect ADD not as a disorder but rather simply a difference. I've come to realise that there are many types of mind in the human gene pool. Many ways of thinking and perceiving.

I've also realised that many people who are critical of others are simply small thinkers and often they just don't get it. In a world obsessed with being right all the time, criticism is often nothing more than the tepid defense of an inflexible mind.

I have add, and it is like... You get so many GREAT ideas, you THINK you can accomplish, but then you never get a damn thing done. It's like... even if you appear to be "NORMAL", on the inside you get so many WONDERFUL ideas about how the world works, or the perception of what will make you happy. For me, for 5 years I thought money was going to make me happy. So I concentrated ALL my efforts on starting "niche businesses" online, that really never went anywhere, and I'm broker than I would be now if I would have just gone and worked at a grocery store. At least then, I'd be topped out making $17 an hour. Having ADD, is like you have this genius mind that just cannot comprehend the social cues around you to the point where you get lost in the water. There are a whole lot of other things that come along with ADD. Depression, for instance, when you realize how badly you have SCREWED yourself. It is not fun living with ADD.
