The Australian dot au Top Level Domain

Saturday, April 22, 2006

I'm really proud of the Australian .au TLD. A lot of smart people in the auDA have ensured that .au is a good investment. The value of the .au TLD is implied trust. For example, a .com.au is a commercial entity (at least a registered business name) guaranteed. And as such, is traceable to a real world entity. A .org.au or asn.au are accurate descriptions of what they are; a charity or non-profit organisation or incorporated association respectively.

Often Australian web clients will prefer to register a dot com over a dot com dot au for a variety of reasons like everyone uses dot com, it sounds better, people are used to typing it in or too many restrictions on what domain name they can get. In a WWW where any charlatan can register a .com, the value of the trust implied in .au is often overlooked and undervalued.

If you are an Australian entity get an Australian domain name. Your clients will trust your website, just that little bit more.
