Embrace the web for longevity!
Wednesday, November 30, 2005I found some interesting comparisions today. Comparisons between those who embrace the web and those who just plain don't. And I can't help feeling it reflects their longevity.
2 Online Dictionaries
The first comparison is service oriented. Here are two dictionary websites, both derive financial relief from advertising. Which one do you think understands the web and plans on sticking around?
Open Dictionary
Open Dictionary is clear and focused on the service they provide. Their ads only appear on results pages and are unobtrusive Google ads.
Your Dictionary

Hmm now where do I type in my search word? Why would anyone want to even look at all that crap let alone click it? I just want to look up the definition of a word so I know which service I'll be using.
Making 'available online'
The second comparison is about making resources avaiable online. Here are 2 brainy, web-oriented people putting their presentations online.
Brian Jones puts his XML 2005 presentation on the Office 12 XML file format online, Tantek Çelik puts his WE05 presentation 'The Elements Of Meaningful XHTML' online. Which, out of these two, really get's what it means to make something available 'online'? Which presentation will be around the longest?
Tantek's presentation is a 33KB single HTML file, which degrades gracefully according to user agent ability. Brian Jones links to his 'deck', AKA a 2MB powerpoint file, he also offers this link to view his presentation via some media service, but when I clicked it earlier today it told me that it only supports Internet Explorer 5.0 and up on windows, Internet Explorer 5.2.2 on Mac and Netscape 7.0 . I was using Firefox 1.5.
Interesting comparisons both....
