Domain Parking: The Langoliers of the Internet

Tuesday, January 3, 2006

firefoc.comDomain parking companies are a blight on the internet; they are pure evil. They are the anti-semantic web. They are the rot and decay of information. They are the Langoliers of the Internet.

In Stephen King's novella ' The Langoliers' he explores the notion that as the present moves forward in time, the past disolves into chaos.
In the story a plane flies through a strange electrical storm, and everybody on board not asleep vanishes. The sleepers awaken to find they are alone on the plane. One of the sleepers is a pilot and he lands the plane but they discover they are also all alone in the world. Not only that but everything seems stale; food looses it's taste and matches don't burn as bright.

The plane has actually moved into the past a short way, and the passengers work out that the past simply fades out only to be devoured by scary little creatures with lots of razor sharp teeth. One of the passengers (who turns out to be quite insane) names them the 'Langoliers', after something his grandmother used to frighten him with as a child. The Langoliers are creatures who hunt down and eat those without purpose in life.

Domain parking pages consume the purposeless corners of the internet, the expired domain names, the misspellings, the popular name  grabbers. They squat and offer no real information or purpose. They are the Langoliers!

Can you give any examples of the kind of domain parking you're referring to? I think there are different types. There are companies that only list paid links on their parked pages - they are the langoliers - but there are others, like registrars, who do offer a service for creating holding pages whilst you build the 'real' website. Isn't there a difference?
