2006-06-29 Ramblings
Thursday, June 29, 2006# One thing I've noticed with RSS is the lull every Monday. I expect it's due to the fact that it's still sunday evening in the US. Not much activity seems to happen. I wonder if there's a window of opportunity for an Australian blog to make noise every Monday, Australian time. while the US sleeps... ? I mean we are ahead in time. Instead of just waiting for the US to wake up and update their blogs, could we turn that to our advantage?
# We're installing an enormous finance system at work. Most of the staff facing parts are browser based. Of course it's IE6 only, of course the only way into the 'portal' is the front door, of course there is no linking or bookmarking and of course I've been told I have to make the browser window launch without browser chrome because the back button will break it. I wonder how much longer these kinds of dinosours will last.
# Speaking of bringing the internet to the intranet: RSS: The new intranet protocol?
# Bing Gordon of EA says this: "I think that “virtual worlding” will soon be a rite of passage for all teenagers with access to the internet." And I know exactly what he means. My kids are not even teenagers yet and already they have accounts in several free, web based online multiplayer worlds. They meet their school friends online there out of school time. They organise in-game group meetups. I'm amazed at how comfortable they are with multiple identities. 2 of my sons, while playing one of these games decided to play female characters because male characters are more likely to befriend them and shower them with gifts like gems and magc items.
# A sign of things to come: American Apparel opens a real shop in the game Second Life.
