# It would seem a lot of these new fangled website based services have the following strategy:
- Find a way to fill up pages and pages with text
- Put Google Ads on every page
- ?
- Profit!
Isn't that as bad as the dark ages of 1999?
# I'm still hesitant about iTunes or any other digital music download service. I've dabbled and gifting songs is kinda fun but it struck me the other day as I was transfering my iTunes bought music to CD:
- The supplier maintains control of my music
- They are flogging an inferior copy
Sure I can burn to audio CD from iTunes, but it's not CD quality. If I buy a CD, I can keep the original CD quality format, I can choose what format and what level of quality use to convert to a digital format.
I remember when I first started playing with MP3s I would rip my CDs at 128k which was fine to listen to them with my PC headphones. The first time I played them through a stereo system It sounded crap. So I re-ripped all my music at 196k and decided to go with Ogg Vorbis instead of MP3. Much better on the cheap stereo. So now I've bought myself a good pair of hifi headphones (Sennheiser) and heard the need to re-rip again, this time at 256k. So it sounds much nicer now. So I'm glad I have all my music on CD for the time being. Until I can buy CD quality digital music that is in a flexible format I'll be hesitant to spend my money.
# Microsoft are really going for it aren't they. Look at all those new web services.
# Tom Coates is a very smart bloke.
# What he says about URIs is true. When I see a URI like this:
http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/search/results.jhtml?_DARGS=%2Fwp%2Fsearch%2FresSearchInput.jhtml I just don't feel like it's a web service I can trust to be around for long. Exposing technology in URIs is bad. I need to be able to trust that a service/resource is going to be at a certain URI for a long time. If your technology is showing I know that the URI is only good until the next change of management when the incoming boss decides to do it all differently...
# Bed time...
